When God Breathes Life-June 2007
I took a walk this evening. As I began to walk, I started talking to God and pondering some things. Among them was the question, "God, how do I know when it is you speaking and not me? How can I be sure that I hear Your voice, and not my own?" Then I became sidetracked and began to look at the trees where I was walking. I could still see the faint reminders of the damage of the ice storm, and yet there was this new, vibrant beauty; life that the trees had pouring from them. Looking at the trees, I began to form some thoughts in my head that went something like this:
Perhaps nothing is more precious to behold than the sight of God breathing life into somthing that was dead. A tree that looked broken and battered, yet flourished in shades of green when the time came. A person who is awakened from a hopeless coma. A shattered heart put back together. A runaway son who finally returns home. The salvation of a lost soul that most gave up on.
What does it mean to be alive in Christ? Does it simply mean we eat, sleep, and call ourselves "Christians" by name? How often do we live life just like that? God longs to breathe life into us daily-to make us real, to fill our hearts with love for Him and others, joy, to challenge and bless us. Yet so many times, we (me included) wake up, live our normal day out, and forget to stop and think about what it really means to have abundant life.
If God takes the time to daily breathe life into nature, how much more do you think He is waiting for us to say "yes...do it God" and breathe His life into us daily? Sometimes our eyes are so clouded. We look at life and others around us and see ugliness, brokeness, destruction, and death. And God sees what He has planned...the new growth on the broken, ugly, seemingly dead trees. He sees coming what we cannot, which should inspire us to a great degree to seek out God's heart and his eyes when we look at the world around us, including ourselves. The Bible says that creations speaks of its Creator. Do we take the time to listen to what God has to say to us through His creation? I haven't. Not really. But I need to.
I smiled as I walked along, in awe that the God of the universe would take a walk with me and inspire me in this way. Towards the end of my walk, the question I began with came back to me-"God, how do I know when it is you speaking and not me? How can I be sure that I hear Your voice, and not my own?" I smiled, as I realized that I didn't get sidetracked after all; God just took me on a little journey to begin to answer my question. I knew in my heart at that moment that God is taking me on a journey to show me how He speaks to me and how to recognize Him. I had this sense; this knowledge...its like He was saying, "This is one way I do and will speak to you. If you keep seeking me, I will begin to reveal more and show you more."
What a wonderful thing to have God put something so distinct and full of love in your heart! I walked past an elderly apartment complex down the street a short ways from me and saw a woman outside. I was reminded at this point that my mission, my purpose is to love God with all my heart, let Him fill me with His love, so that I, in turn, may love others the best way that I can.
God challenged me to continue to seek Him with my whole heart...and let me tell you, He really will speak to you in such a clear, yet creative, beautiful, personal way...that is just perfect for you.
I debated over whether or not I was going to put this on here, but as God spoke to my heart, it was so encouraging that I realized it would be selfish to not share this with others on the chance that they may be encouraged also.
Be blessed in the knowledge that you have a Savior who desires to breathe life into you daily in a real, significant way, and that He has purpose for you. Let God breathe life into you and just see what He does in your life! Take a few minutes to look at what God has put all around it and listen to the whisper of God's heart. It will truly change your life.
