Kiddos at Their Finest...

So this is sort of a silly and light-hearted post...(and I'm pretty tired so this ought to be good...). Spending the day surrounded by 8 year-olds is never dull. At any given moment in time, one may hear things like, "Miss V. there's no more toilet paper in the boys bathroom..." Boy #2- "So...you didn't wipe?" Nice. Or, "I'm allergic to squirrels Miss V." Or, "Miss V., how come you are always smiling? Is it to make me mad?

Recently, I have a little girl who keeps bringing insects to class. Luckily, they are contained in a jar of sorts. Today she brought in lady bugs. She asked to go in and get them during recess, upon which I told he in shocked expression, "You made them stay inside and miss part of their recess? They are probably in there crying right now! Go get them!!" She giggled and ran off to get them, telling me I was silly. (she has no idea!) I proceeded to include them in everything the class did for the day. It was ridiculous and I loved every minute. Pretty sure they did too. (The kids, not the ladybugs. Well, maybe...) This same girl told me yesterday that I was weird, then tried to convince me that weird was the same as funny, and that it was okay because she was too. Excellent.

And then, how could you not love 2nd grade romance...I literally watched a kid "break up" with a girl at recess, and another kid moved in within a minute to "ask her out".  This is the stuff recess duty is made of. The "I love you" and "I hate you" notes make periodic appearances in the class, while others tattle that so-and-so said I like so-and-so. And then without fail, someone pipes up, "Hey Miss V., how come you aren't married?"

Or it's always fun when Spring comes around and we talk about Life Cycles. Without fail, I end up reading some book that starts talking about baby animals nursing, or how baby animals are made...and I find myself editing the text so that I don't have to witness conversations. That's right...not worried about answering questions because as soon as one child pipes up and blurts out, another one is their with their own answer (usually some form of correct, but missing a few parts and a few added in) and all of a sudden, there is a carpet discussion going on about how babies nurse from their moms and I'm sitting in front with my non-fiction book wondering what just happened. These are the things college doesn't teach you. And I'm sort of glad because it is so much more fun learning this way. :)

What a fun job. :) Today I wore a dress to work, just because I felt like dressing up. A parent told me I looked like I was headed to a hot date... "No...just EMT class..." and a little boy in 1st grade said, "I like your dress!" Awww. Compliments from those little kiddos are so sweet to me! How cute of them to notice and say.  But I think my favorite thing today was when I met with my little lunch group and asked them, "I want you to tell me about one of the happiest times you remember". One girl confidently looked at me and said, "My happiest time ever is knowing Jesus died on the cross for me." She smiled and said a few more things, and it touched my heart deeply. Later on, a boy in my class said he liked the rock song that the construction guys outside had on. I told him to sing it for me so I could figure out what it was. He said, "You don't listen to rock, you won't know it!" And I said, "How do you know what I listen to?" And he said, "You listen to Christian music." I was taken aback as I obviously never discussed being a Christian with my students or what kind of music I listen to.  I asked him how he knew that, and he gave me the "duh" face and said, "Because you go to church."  Hmm. Made me think...made me think about how much we get watched and how our lives really do affect others.

I love my kiddos. Time is running out with them. Only what, 6 weeks left with them. I plan on making the most of that time and making sure they leave 2nd grade knowing Miss V. loves them bunches. :)
